Την M.Τρίτη 15/4/2025 στις 17:00 θα επισκεφτεί το Τμήμα Πληροφορικής και Τηλεματικής του Χαροκοπείου Πανεπιστημίου ο διακεκριμένος επιστήμονας Dr. Selim Solmaz από την εταιρεία Virtual Vehicle για μία ομιλία με θέμα “Automated Driving and Autonomous Systems: Trends, Infrastructure, Safety, and Broader Applications”.

Abstract: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selim Solmaz, leading the Control Systems Group at Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH, works with his team on autonomous systems across diverse domains. This lecture will provide an overview of recent advancements, beginning with key trends and technological shifts in connected automated driving systems over the past five years. A central theme will be the critical role of infrastructure support. Dr. Solmaz will illustrate this by drawing from the ESRIUM and ESERCOM-D projects, emphasizing how utilizing road condition information for strategic routing can significantly enhance automated vehicle safety, operation, and road network management.

Complementing infrastructure considerations, ensuring vehicle-side safety and trustworthiness is paramount. Experiences from the ArchitectECA2030 project will highlight essential safety assurance methods, focusing on techniques like runtime system monitoring and the implementation of redundant sensor configurations. These approaches are crucial for building confidence and ensuring the reliability of autonomous vehicle technology in complex environments.

The impact of these automation advancements extends well beyond passenger transportation. Insights from the AIQReady, Archimedes, and Cynerg4MIE projects will demonstrate the transformative potential for autonomous systems to revolutionize critical areas such as disaster response and search and rescue operations. Concluding the lecture, Dr. Solmaz will synthesize these findings, outlining future research directions and emphasizing the profound potential of integrated connected automated driving and autonomous systems to reshape mobility, enhance safety, and address broader societal challenges.

Short bio: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selim Solmaz obtained his B.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 2001 and his M.Sc. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University, West Lafayette, in 2003. He earned his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM) in 2008. From 2010 to 2018, Dr. Solmaz served as a lecturer in Turkey and Cyprus, leading or contributing to numerous research projects in renewable energy, electrified drivetrains, and vehicle dynamics and control. Alongside his academic duties, he held various administrative roles, including Head of Graduate School, Head of Department, and Vice Dean. In the summer of 2018, Dr. Solmaz joined Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH, where he currently leads the Control Systems Group within the Department of Electrics, Electronics, and Software. His research group focuses on automated mobility and autonomous robotic systems.
